If you have ever looked at your Wi-Fi settings, you have probably seen two networks with similar names, one ending in 2.4G and one in 5G. They are two different radio bands on the same router, and choosing the right one can make your internet feel faster and more reliable. Here is a simple guide.
What is a dual-band router?
A dual-band router can send Wi-Fi on two frequencies at the same time: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Each band has its own strengths, and your devices can connect to whichever suits them best.

2.4GHz: longer reach, slower speeds
- Better range: the signal travels farther and passes through walls and floors more easily.
- Lower top speeds: it is not as fast as 5GHz.
- More interference: many devices use this band, including microwaves, Bluetooth gadgets and your neighbors' Wi-Fi, which can slow things down.
- Widest device support: some older and smart-home devices only work on 2.4GHz.
5GHz: faster speeds, shorter reach
- Higher speeds: better for streaming, video calls, online gaming and large downloads.
- Less crowded: fewer devices compete on this band, so the connection is usually steadier.
- Shorter range: the signal is weaker at a distance and does not pass through walls as well.
Quick comparison
| 2.4GHz | 5GHz | |
|---|---|---|
| Range | Longer | Shorter |
| Speed | Lower | Higher |
| Through walls | Better | Weaker |
| Interference | More | Less |
| Best for | Far rooms, smart-home devices, basic browsing | Streaming, gaming, video calls, downloads |
Which band should you use?
- Use 5GHz for laptops, phones, TVs and consoles that are in the same room as the router or close by.
- Use 2.4GHz for devices that are far from the router or on another floor, and for smart plugs, cameras and other smart-home gadgets that only support it.
Tips for a better Wi-Fi signal
- Place the router in a central, open spot, off the floor and away from thick walls and large metal objects.
- Keep it away from microwaves and cordless phones.
- Give the two bands different names, such as Home-2.4G and Home-5G, so you can choose which one each device uses.
- Restart your router now and then, and keep its settings updated.
Actual speed and coverage always depend on your internet plan, your home layout and the devices you use.
